The Granny Shack

Hello there lovelies!
Now,  I promised previously that I would bring you more news about my little flat (or The Granny Shack, as it has been affectionately renamed by Nicki.)
I love this little flat sooooo much and while it isn’t mine, it’s only rented, it’s the first time that I have lived completely on my own and I LOVE it!  I was getting to the point that no matter how nice the houses were, house shares weren’t for me.  I couldn’t get it out of my head that I still felt like a student living in one.  I felt I really needed my own space to do with what I pleased.  To be surrounded with just my stuff, no-one else’s, somewhere to make pretty and feel like home for me.

see completely surrounded by MY STUFF!

So I am going to give you a few little glimpses into The Granny Shack and what I have done to it so far.  It’s still very much a work in progress and I have a whole heap of ideas that I’ve pinned on my “For the flat” Pinterest board but I like how it’s starting to look.  There are some rooms that I’ve focused on more than others at this stage, namely the ones that visitors see!  My bedroom had become a bit of a dumping/hiding the mess room until the other weekend when I finally got it semi sorted (just some furniture to acquire before I can start unpacking some of the boxes that I’ve hidden away in the very many wardrobes.)
I’m happy with how the living room is looking at the moment, again just a bit of furniture to get for that so I can have my crafty books displayed properly but it feels homely and more importantly it feels like me.

My sofa with The Blanket on it and my gorgeous Erin cushion.  I made a slight Dottie Angel inspired wall with pictures and pompoms and the gorgeous tea towel sent to me from my IG buddie @jacci just had to be up there too!

Love my mantelpiece and it displays many of my favouritest things on it.  I am so proud of my little knitted houses and this latest addition on the left is a gorgeous pincushion, one of two pincushions, made for me by my gorgeous buddy Cuckoo when I hinted last week that I didn't own a pincushion.   This is turning into a proper little Somerset village.  The knitted house is called The Higgledy Piggeldy Somerset Cottage (because it's far from perfect and I made it mainly in Somerset.)  The one to the right is the Granny Annex of the cottage and my new one has been named Myrtle Cottage by Cuckoo (after a similarish looking cottage in her village!)

I love that I have a dresser too.  This is mainly filled with crafty bits and some more gorgeous prints (but I am going to do a separate post about Art Work around the Granny Shack and give full credit to all the lovely arty people I have discovered.)

I love having fresh flowers about the place.  This is my favourite and my best jug and I love it to be paired with gorgeous flowers.  Love this quote too (but that's for my art work post too.)

I love baking up a storm and having friends over for tea and cakes.  Yum yum!  I'm writing this at lunch time and thinking how nice it would be to have a scone with jam and cream right now with a steaming hot cuppa!

Yes we need a closer look at that gorgeous cake stand made by the equally gorgeous Claire aka Mummybird  I love this spoon and fork too and plan to add to the collection so I can use cake forks at my tea parties.  Bought from the scrumptious The Corner House

I have mainly focused my attention on the living room and the kitchen.  I will show you a better glimpse of the kitchen when I am at home in daylight hours.

It's safe to say that cook books feature a lot in my kitchen along with lots of other pretties.  More for The Granny Shack Part II

My bedroom was getting me down a bit as it was a bit forgotten about.  Living on my own I can spend my time in any room I like when I like so the bedroom is mainly for sleeping (rather than chilling or hiding!) so things got a bit shoved in there.  For now, to inject some instant cheeriness I have added some Cath Kidston bedding and some lovely bunting from  Jane (of littleteawagon fame.)  I have a couple of Katie Daisy prints up there washi taped to the wall but they feel a little lost.  Think they may need framing and displaying on a shelf.  I have another idea for that wall behind the bed which will be part of my Easter Holidays Granny Shack Project.

A few more tulips to add instant colour to my very white looking bedroom.  I was very sad to discover that my latest Rob Ryan mug had the tiniest of chips in it.  Once I noticed it I couldn't bring myself to use it so it can be a flower holder instead.  I think it suits the tulips quite well.

I will be back with a few more flat snaps soon.  I'm really loving making my flat a home and putting my own quirky stamps on it.  I have a whole host of exciting ideas (Pinterest you have a lot to answer for) to inject into the space and am planning a rather exciting trip over the Easter holidays to pick up a few pieces for The Granny Shack.

Have a good day you lovely lot!

WOW 2013!

I know, two posts in two days.  I'm on a roll!  I've decided that I need to be a better blogger and am going to comit!  That's why I started a blog after all.
So this morning (and for a few mornings now) I found it really hard to get out of bed.  I hate the grey, cold days and increasingly I can't get it out of my head that I would much rather be at home crafting.  I LOVE my day job.  In fact, crafting aside, it's my ideal thing to do.  I am very passionate about my day job and spend my days, mainly filled with joy, smiling and laughing through the days feeling lots of love and knowing that I am doing a good job.  I will do a post about my day job some time soon, back to my thinking this morning.  So I was in bed, pressing snooze, really feeling like I didn't want to get out of bed.  I think I am suffering from SAD big time.  I am usually a very happy, cheery person, more than happy with my life and my little world but every year in February I can a little twitch that I sometimes can't shake off.  Usually at this time of year I start browsing the job pages and wondering what the rest of the country/world holds in store for me.  I start to dream and plan but then these go nowhere.  I always wonder if the grass really is greener but usually my thinking decides that it probably isn't.  I read somewhere online (and think I have it pinned on my Pinterest board) that "if we spent more time watering our own grass it would be just as green."  I think this is really true.  I need to spend a little more time and attention focusing on the good in my life and thinking about improving the areas that aren't quite so good.  I know I will snap out of this soon (I'm hoping come Friday and the start of March my mood will pick up.)
In an attempt to focus on the positive I decided to think back to how amazing 2013 has been so far.  We are only in February, but I can already say that 2013 has been pretty amazing.  I had a fab year last year and had a feeling in my gut that 2013 would be even better.  If the first two months are anything to go by then I'm in for a treat!
There have been 3 MAJOR (I would go as far as saying life changing) things that have happened so far in 2013 (all of which needed lots of preparation in 2012 but came into place this year.)
Firstly (and I believe most importantly, my nephew was born on 10th January.  This little guy is quite possibly my new favourite person in the whole wide world.  The love I feel for him is unreal.  I am not interested in having children myself but having a nephew has got to be the most awesome thing ever.  I get all the lovely bits and am happy to deal with some of the not so lovely bits and I get to hand him back (so don't lose any sleep!)  I am looking forward to being the best auntie ever at each stage of his life.  My heart feels like there's not much room left for much else at the moment.

Me with Sam in the hospital when he was about 20 hours old.  It was love at first sight!

Sam on the blanket that I crocheted for him.  A whole heap of love went into this blanket.  I made it before I knew if he was going to be a he.  I hope that he will have this blanket for his whole life and that it will become a treasured possession.

I saw this idea online, to make a top or baby grow with the numbers 1-12 on.  The baby wears the item when he is that number of months old.  Here he is in his number 1 vest I made him.  One of my first screen printed items.  I must make the 2 as he will be 2 months before we know it!

Me with Sam last week.  I visited for a few hours one day in half term and was lucky to get lots of Sam cuddles.  I was very selfish and held him the whole time I was there.  He was grizzly but dozed a bit while I held him.  I can handle crying babies for a day (at a reasonable hour! hehe!)

Second wow event of 2013 (for which I did all the work in May/June 2012) was I had a couple of patterns published in a crochet book.  Now it's not much, it's a big Everything You May Need to Ever Know About Crochet book and my little patterns are only 2 of 20 but I feel proud all the same.  I feel even more chuffed about the fact that it was Catherine who asked me to be involved.  It was Catherine who taught me to crochet so I felt very honoured when I realised she thought I was good enough TO BE IN A BOOK!!  I was working to some quite tight project specifications set by the publishers but it's got me thinking about lots of designs that I have in my head and maybe putting a few on paper over my long summer holiday this year! Watch this space!  My mind is racing with creative ideas!

So, according to this book I'm an author!!  I made and wrote the patterns for two blankets in this book.  I love seeing my projects having been professionally photographed.  They look amazing (even if I do say so myself!)  I wish everything I make could be photographed like this!
The third thing that happened in 2013 at the end of January was that I graduated from my MA in Professional Studies in Education.  So the work for all of this was last year (and a whole summer of thinking about or writing my disseration) but the nice bits, the celebratory bits were this year!  I had a lovely day in Kingston at the graduations ceremony and then for a yummy lunch and cocktails with my mum.  I wore my gorgeous new Poppy dress which my parents bought me for Christmas but I had been saving to wear for the first time for my graduation.  After lunch we went to visit my brother, sister in law and little Sam!  A perfect end to a lovely day.

We did it!!  Me and three teacher colleagues who completed the course this year!

Me and my mum outside the theatre (note my mum is proudly wearing the corsage brooch I made her for Christmas and coincidently colour co-ordinating with my gown!!)

I've just realised why I might be feeling so poopy!  All of these amazing things happened in January!  Maybe February feels like a bit of an anti climax after all of that!

How's 2013 been for you so far?

How I have learnt to love knitting

So, as a young girl I dabbled in knitting and crochet. I remember my maternal grandmother showing me both. I have a definite memory of making long crochet chains but never  more than thaI then t and i remember knitting (but needing someone else to cast on and off for me.) Around three years ago (or four maybe is that right Catherine ?) I decided I should learn to crochet properly (and became a rather long standing student of Catherine, to whom I am eternally grateful for being the most patient teacher ever, even with me who hates being a beginner at anything!)
I got very excited about the whole crochet thing and dreamt up plans of all the things i wanted to make and spent most of my free time happily whipping things up with my hook.
I love crochet and get very excited about all the things I want to make but I decided I wanted to give knitting another go. I was passionate about crochet and loved the idea of knitting too and being able to make all the lovely knitted things i saw around that don't look the same crocheted.
I tried my hand at knitting but got very frustrated by it. I coudn't cast my mind back only a few years to when I was new to crochet and how it took me ages to pick up the basics and lots of time makig up "Erin stitches" as Catherine christened them. I wated to be able to knit, straight away. My first attempts left me a tad frustrated and I kept going back to the crochet.
More recently, thanks to Pinterest and of course Instagram (I love Instagram, it's changed my life, but that's a whole separate post!) I was getting the urge to knit again after seeing so much lovely stuff.
Through bloggy land and Instagram I got chatting to Cuckoo and Suzie and that got me thinking about knitting more and more.  I decided to give it a bit more of a chance as I really wanted to make some of Suzie's gorgeous patterns.  So back in November I invited myself along to The Wool Sanctuary and to Knit Club when Suzie had promised me that she would help me with her Knitted House (which I had been desparate to make since receiving my copy of her book.)  Oh before all of this I made one of Suzie's beach huts as a bit of a practice.  So I went along to the West Country for a weekend to spend a night with Suzie and attended Knit Club and then a night with Cuckoo.
So anyways with Ikea deliveries and a busy Knit Club Suzie didn't have a chance to show me how to make the house.  I started with the easy bit and then Cuckoo had assured me that she would be able to help with the tricky colour changes.

Cuckoo's crafty Bird Box with my little house in progress!

Cuckoo concentrating on unravelling my mess of the house!

On the train on the way home after a wonderful stay chez Cuckoo with her gorgeous family.  Note the tangle is hidden underneath the work!!

I was so very proud of my little house and it now has pride of place on my mantelpiece.  If you don't already have it go and buy Suzie's book it's amazeballs and check out her Ravelry page for further wonderful patterns!

So I got the bug for knitting, or so it seems I have the bug for knitting Suzie's patterns! haha!!

I bought the Humbug pattern and against Suzie's advice made a start. ........and got stuck.  Luckily I have been lucky enough to return to The Wool Sanctuary and have met up with Suzie when she has been in Essex and have enlisted her help to sort them out.   Just the other week when I spent a weekend at Suzie's and was able to get help with the right one and complete the left one!

Woo hoo!!!  I love them!!  They were fun to knit (onece I got over the frustration) and they have been much admired!  I've even been asked where I bought them and beamed while replying "I made them!"

I'm already making a Ray of Light shawl (mine's the green one next to Suzie's one!)  This is going to be my mum's birthday present. I'd better get cracking, I have till mid April and as you can see it's less than half the size it should be!!

I'm also on to my next pair of wrist warmers (Button Moons)  I'm addicted!

I also thought these little houses were way to cute not to have a go at!!  I think it looks right at home next to the little knitted house.  Like a little Granny Annex!

So thank you to two of my newest friends who have inspired my love of knitting and have (and continue to) help me along the way.

How can you not want to spend all your time knitting when this is your LIVING ROOM!!!!  Heavenly!!

As if I wasn't already inspired enough to keep knitting and get better how AWESOME are these?!

My very own Suzie Johnson originals made especially for me!!  I am so chuffed.  Love them to bits!

I have added a cushion to the big case and think it looks swell in the Granny Shack!!  Inspirational knitting!!

What have you been making lately?  I love seeing everyone's projects!

wowzers!!

Hello my lovlies.
What happened to the rest of 2012 and how did it get to be January already? * whoops its now FeB  I started this post AGES ago!!*  I obviously hadn't planned on starting a blog and then abandoning it after only two posts. The last couple of months have been a bit busy to say the least!
So let's go back a bit to what had happened since I spoke to you last.
I had half heartily been looking to move but hadn't put too much effort into my search. In fact i had been downright lazy! I wanted to rent a flat and live on my own. I wanted to be not to far from work, I wanted a separate living room and outdoor access for the cats (oh yeah and cat friendly.) Beyond that I wasn't too fussy. In October half term I walked into one agency and left my details. That was ALL I did!! See I told you I was lazy! Now the thought didn't even occur to me to even keep an eye on the agency's website even. I figured they would contact me if something came up. Even being at my wits end and in dire need for my own space didn't make me put any more effort into the search! Defo very lazy!
I am a very lucky and optimistic person and believe that things always work out for the best. This way of thinking always gets me by and is a pretty good way to live. It means on the whole I'm always happy. Luck was on my side in my flat hunt too. After a couple of weeks doing NOTHING I got a call from a guy at the agency. He started off by saying "I don't know what your style is but I may have somewhere you may be interested in. If you're in to modern then you may not like it, it's quite old fashioned. Would you like to view it?" The very idea of it being old fashioned got me quite excited and upon hearing the location my heart started beating a little faster. It was in the " posh part" of my favourite location. It was a ground floor flat of what i knew were potentially very nice houses (I used to rent a houeshare a few roads away.) However it was out of my budget. I agreed to go and view it and told myself I wouldn't be pressurised into making any quick decisions. It turned out I was viewing it with two other interested parties! Awkward! I loved the flat, so did the other two interested parties. Awkward but such is the nature of the demand for one and two bedroom rental properties.  We all got taken back to the agency and got asked to write down "offers" to the landlord for the amount of rent we would be prepared to pay. I have never heard of anyone doing similar. I figured I had nothing to lose and although I loved the flat it was only the first one I had viewed and was out of my price range. I decided to put in a cheeky offer which was at the top of what I was prepared to pay. I felt if it was the flat for me then I would get it. I had a nervewracking wait till the next day (due to the fact the landlady lives in Australia.) So I got a call the next day to say I was successful. Mine was the lowest offer but was the "most professional." Woo hoo.
I moved in at the end of November and have spent way to much time prettyfiying it and not enough time doing boring things like sorting out my internet and shower!!
Ok, so I'm sure you're all desperate to see some pics but I am at work right now, in my lunch hour trying to not let my blog look so abandoned!
I will come back with another post of a general round up of the AMAZING things that have happened to me since my last proper post.  With plenty of pictures to make up for this one! Promise! I will even include pics of my flat!  *note to self - sort out internet in half term (and a working computer would be useful for blogging right?!*
Have a lovely Tuesday people!

A Perfect Spot for a Pot of Tea and a Slice of Cake

Today saw the long awaited opening of a new tea room.  This isn't any old tea room.  This is a tea room opened by my aunt (my mum's younger sister) and one of her friends.  I have known about this for what feels like forever!  I had chatted to my aunt about it and heard all of her ideas about different aspects of how the tea room would look.  In many ways it's just what I would do and reflects the kind of style of many of my favourite tea joints!

The tea shop is called Buscall and Flynn's (the surnames of the two owners) and is in Chelmsford, Essex.  It was truly amazing seeing this becoming a reality.

After a frantic rush we made it there in time for the opening, phew.  Here is the cutting of the ribbon and declaring it open for business.  It was exciting waiting for the customers to flock in and boy flock in is exactly what they did.  I went along to help out for (what was supposed to be) the morning but as the customers kept coming and the orders needing taking I ended up staying longer than I had intended!  I didn't mind as it was all hands needed on deck for the first day.

I was given a uniform pinny and put to work as a waitress for the day.  Hehe!  I must add here that this is me posing for a picture taken by my brother, I'm pretty sure I did not have this expression on my face when I was taking orders for real!  It was hard work and I am certainly planning on a very chilled day tomorrow to recover.  I was serving customers upstairs and I definitely got plenty of exercise running up and down the stairs.  I have never worked as a waitress before and was so pleased that I didn't spill anything or drop anything (particularly on the customers!) and especially as I was carrying loaded trays full of vintage crockery up and down stairs.

Scones and cakes.  Cream tea anyone?

Mini diddy cupcakes on a gorgeous cake stand made from vintage plates by my aunt.  These particular plates belonged to my beautiful nan.  She would have been so very very proud of my aunt today and what she has achieved.  So wonderful to have some of her crockery there today being enjoyed and displayed.
A fridge full of cupcakes!  Gorgeous!

All of the furniture and crockery for the tea room has been collected over the past few months by Rachel and Angela.  Chairs and tables were bought in smaller sets from ebay and then painted by Angela and Rachel, along with some other helpers.  The crockery has been amassed from, not only personal collections such as those that came from my nan, but also from a number of car boot sales, charity shops and ebay.  The end result of mismatching cups, saucers and plates adds to the overall charm and provided a talking point for many of the customers today (one of the questions I was asked several times!)  I really wish I could have taken more pictures of the different crockery combinations but I was a bit too busy for anything more than the odd cheeky snap!  The cutlerly is gorgeous as was ordered as sets.

I did manage to steal a couple of moments to sit down with a gorgeous rose lemonade just before lunchtime rush (which didn't end until closing time.)

A range of yummy cakes and sandwiches (including bagels and panninis) are served alongside, of course cream teas.  If you happen to find yourself in Chelmsford, please do pop in.  The very lovely Kath popped in today for a spot of lunch with her hubby and gorgeous little boy.  I was so pleased that they could come along today on opening day (and just a bit annoyed that I didn't have time for a spot of catching up, sorry Kath.)
Before they opened, they had always planned to have a half price offer on all food orders on opening day.  Very sadly, a very good friend of my aunt  and (my favourite nearly) uncle passed away on Monday night.  He was a plumber by trade and had done all of the plumbing work in the tea room even though he was very ill.  As a tribute to him they offered all customers the option to pay full price for their food today, with 50% of the money going to Cancer Research Today's customers proved very generous and hopefully they raised a good sum of money to donate in Darren's name.
After a long day on my feet surrounded by cake and food what did I do when I got home?  I baked a cake of course! hehe!  I was sooooo craving cake after seeing so many tasty looking options.  It must be noted here that I did not shun the gorgeous cakes on offer.  They all looked and smelt delicious.  I am gluten intolerant and today there wasn't any gluten free cakes on offer (I have been informed that this won't always be the case!)  My aunt makes scrummy gluten free cakes and always considers me when baking (some family occasions are all gluten free so I don't miss out on anything!)  I look forward to going back very soon for a pot of tea and some cake!  For now here's the cake I had today.

I made this cake one of my absolute favourites.  I LOVE lemon cake.  In fact, I'm pretty sure about this, I think lemon cake is my favourite!  I am so tired (and I was so desperate to eat the cake!) that I forgot to do the lemon juice/icing sugar combo on the top.  Truth is, I think I prefer it this way.  The syrupy bit sometimes makes it too moist and too sweet.  I'm happy with how it turned out (oh and I was an egg short so added some milk! hehe!!  I NEVER usually play around with baking recipes, must have been getting big ideas having spent the day in a tea room!)
What are your favourite cakes?  What are your favourite recipes/books?  (I love recipe books but that's a whole other post and I will dedicate time to that once my extensive collection is with me in my new kitchen!  I am excited about all my open shelves in the kitchen that I can fill with books.)

Thank you for reading,

Erin x

ps.  Thank you for all of your lovely words on my last post.  On a normal week I will take time to reply to comments but this week has been hectic to say the least, again that's another couple of posts!
pps.  The whole "my favourite nearly uncle thing" I think may need explaining.  My aunt and my (favourite nearly) uncle have been together for 25 years but aren't married.  When I was a teenager I got completely fixated on the idea that they should get married (partly as I hadn't been a bridesmaid by that point and wanted to change that! haha!)  I mentioned it to him every time I saw him, poor man, for at least 3 years!  Whoops!  At that point I used to call him my "nearly uncle" and then added favourite as he was the only one with that title so it made it easy to be the favourite (just like my nan always called me her favourite granddaughter and my brother was her favourite grandson as we were the only grandchidren!)  I must also add that I don't call him that all the time now.  Just every now and again for a joke!

The Super Summer Holiday Memories Blanket

This is the closest to a ta dah I have right now!!  *whispers* it's still not finished!!  Whoops!

Working as a teacher, one of the many advantages are the long summer holidays (yes, there are actually others but perhaps I'll go on to those some other time.)  This year I was particularly lucky as we had a week longer due to working in a host Olympic borough.  I had a few things to do over the summer but hadn't made any big plans due to the fact that I had to write up my dissertation for my MA in Professional Studies in Education for submission in September.
I didn't want my holidays to be all about work though, I work darn hard during term time and knew my batteries would need recharging before starting the new year in September.  I was keen to use the time to catch up with good friends and spend plenty of time making stuff.
I love to craft and up until recently had given away everything I had made.  I wanted to set aside some time this summer to rectify that and my number one crafting priority was to make a blanket for myself.  I LOVE making blankets.  I read a fantabulous post by Pip in which she explored why she loves making blankets so much (sorry can't find the actual post now, rats!) It really rang true with me and summed up everything I love about making blankets.  The memories and emotions connected with each one.  Thus my "me" blanket was born.  The name The Super Sumer Holidays Memories Blanket is somewhat wordy but it works for me.  I wanted a blanket that would remind me of a wonderful summer which was full of not much in particular but very wonderful things at the same time.  I decided to make a Starburst Blanket by Jane Brocket from this book.  Over my seven week holiday I took a little basket of yarn with me EVERYWHERE!!  I think everyone who I met up with saw at least four squares produced.  As a result I have squares which hold an array of wonderful memories.  I have squares that were made while I enjoyed the freedom of being able to do exactly what I wanted to, sitting in coffee shops and parks along with a drink and my crochet, squares made in a Cambridgeshire orchard while having lunch with a friend, squares made in Hackney while enjoying coffee and cake with a friend, squares by the canal while catching up with a friend I hadn't seen for too long, squares made on the Eurostar on my way to visit good friends and their new baby, sneaky squares made in the garden in France while the baby and the other adults in the house slept.  So many happy but simple memories.  Everywhere I went, my little green plastic basket full of yarn came too.  Friends who saw me several times began to expect it (I have deleted the pictures of me carrying said basket of yarn!)
such a happy sight - the pleasure in making this came from knowing that it was all mine!!
Early morning crochet in France in my friends' garden before anyone else was awake

Early morning crochet at home after waking up without an alarm (RIP poor Pip mug!!! boo!!)

Millie taking a bit of a fancy to the blanket

Packing squares away from eager paws and claws

Admiring colour combinations

Really enjoying the fact that this blanket is all mine

This blanket is also filled with a mixture of emotions.  It is full of happiness and sunshine and super lovely times but it also represents a stress relief in a time of dissertation writing.  Also, as I'm being completely honest here, it represents a slight feeling of "why did I spend so much time crocheting when I have so many thousands of words to write and now I'm running out of time" despair feeling.  I don't mind that, I'll happily accept those memories too as they were all part of the summer of 2012!

This blanket is still awaiting the ends being sewn in and the final few rows of the border.  I think I was prolonging finishing it as I had told myself that the ta dah moment would happen on my blog, therefore, finishing the blanket represented getting my blogging started.  I don't know why I was so scared and why I put it off.  I will still of course give this blanket the proper ta dah moment that it so truly deserves but only when I'm good and ready.  The intended home for this blanket is draped over a sofa in a living room.  My living room which as of yet doesn't exist.  When I move in a couple of weeks time and my blanket has it's new home too then I will give it it's moment in the full spotlight again.

Thanks for reading! (and thanks to Cuckoo for telling me to stop being such a wuss about the whole blogging thang!)
